When you first see the pictures – you can’t help but think – how damn cute! Yes, the visual makes you smile but then think about what the dog was put through to have a cute unusual look that draws attention to its owner. The pet owners that get their dogs “colorized” claim it helps the dogs self confidence. All the attention they receive when they are paraded out in public raises their self esteem. This is what the owners are saying.
This craze is already popular in Korea and Japan and is now is finding
popularity with the Chinese. The dog spas cater to the wealthy and many different dog pampering businesses are doing very well in China. The dogs have to be retreated about every 6 months to keep up this transformation to a completely different animal.
One family named their dog after one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and then had him “transformed” into a turtle.
Dogs should not be subjected to hours of hair coloring, possibly irritating their skin during the process. Although some of the spa owners are claiming their supplies are completely harmless, it’s just not necessary to subject them to it. Veterinarians are warning pet owners of the possible skin irritation to watch for but also the psychological effects of completely altering the dog’s appearance. Some professionals believe it actually can have a negative effect on the dog.
