Economy Causing Surrendering of Animals

Sadly, the economy is causing once responsible pet owners to look for other options for their pets. When it comes to choosing between feeding the family and the pet, of course family wins out.

There was a sad story in our local paper about a homeless person giving up their dog to the local shelter because they could not feed the animal anymore. The other, probably larger factor, the foreclosure situation.  People trying to figure out where they will live cannot handle the extra burden of pet ownership expenses as well as a place that allows pets. If there is a danger of losing a home via foreclosure, there is help available from people and organizations in your area that will help you place your pet.

Here are a few tips if you find yourself or you know of someone who is facing this dilemma.

  • Focus on moving to an apartment or rental home that allows pets. These days, more and more landlords are allowing pets. If they didn’t, they’d be cutting off too many potential clients.
  • Rescue groups will often have available lists of foster homes that may take in your pet temporarily until a new home can be found or you get on your feet and can reclaim your pet.
  • Place an ad in local publications offering your pet for adoption.
  • Talk to friends, family, and neighbors who are familiar with your pet and may have such a fondness that they will be willing to foster or adopt your pet.
