Dog are like young children. I’m sure you’ve heard the theory that kids crave and thrive on routine and rules. Same holds true for your dog. Certain people are better suited for dog training than others. It requires patience, authority, and kindness.
Training will create a bond between you and your dog of trust and respect. Before you embark on this project, make sure you know your dog well. It’s best to know the dog’s personality, tendencies, and intelligence level. Dogs are as individual as people with varying degrees of intelligence, stubbornness, as well as other traits that will reflect in his training and may also be a factor in your training style.
Even professional trainers working with all types of animals say that training has a basic principle. If the animal realizes an action has a pleasurable result, that animal will repeat it.
The simplest and most common reward based training involves using food. That is your first step – finding the reward that your pet desires. Some animals react better to a stroke on the belly or neck area. Not all dogs do best with food based training. You have to find the best reward for you and your pet.
Every time your dog accomplishes an order, reward is necessary. The reward must also be joined with praise using a tone in your voice that will make it obvious to the dog that you are pleased. Your tone should convey pleasure. And in the same vein, punish mistakes and misconducts immediately. Let him know you are not happy with his behavior.
Your reward to the dog can just be pure praise and petting or a dog biscuit or small piece of cheese. Punish as little as possible and punish the dog immediately. If you wait, the dog won’t know why you are upset or why your are treating him in the manner you are. The dog will not be able to relate your behavior with the act that they did unless you react immediately. Use a disapproving stern tone in a loud firm voice while saying simple words like – No, bad dog – Go lie down. To a dog, taking it’s freedom away is serious. Shut the dog in a room or tie it up for a short period of time.
At times the best way to halt a bad behavior is to pointedly ignore it. This type of training is best demonstrated with the dog that greets it’s family by jumping on them when they come through the door. Your first reaction would be to reprimand the dog in a stern voice while putting his paws to the ground. But the method that has proven to be most effective is to ignore the dog. The dog is happy that you are home, happy with your acknowledgement even though it is a negative reaction. Try turning your back to the animal and avoid any eye contact. Don’t speak. Shut down your body language as well as verbal reaction. This usually will cause the dog to stop jumping in a short period of time.
Training Your Dog Basic Commands
When professional trainers are asked to weigh in on giving a dog lessons on learning basic commands they had some helpful and practical suggestions that will benefit anyone tackling the task of training a dog.
The first step is to teach them their name and to get their attention. This may seem to basic it doesn’t have to be brought up but the truth is that too many people jump into training without covering the basics. This can lead to frustration and failure from the dog and yourself.
The importance of them learning their name goes hand in hand with getting them to pay attention. Without having these two steps down, the rest of the lessons are almost impossible. You need their attention to the lesson to train them. The professionals say that once they know their name, they need to learn to pay attention and not be so easily distracted.
As stated previously – positive reinforcement, reward for good behavior, repetition and consistency are the keys to training a dog the basics.
Learn to Come
This can be a lifesaver for your dog. By knowing this command, you can lead them away from harm if the situation arises. Don’t call the dog when you know they won’t come and you’re mad at him. If he knows he’ll get scolded, it won’t work. It must be taught using the reward system. If the dog knows he’s pleased you by obeying your command, then the training will stick.
Sit or Down
This is a command that will help keep your dog from jumping or people or chasing objects or animals when it has to be restricted.
Leave It
This is a command that should be taught early in the process and can begin by using food as the item to be left untouched. Reward the dog when they obey. Once they understand the command, you can use it in regards to people, other dogs, cats, cars – and whatever draws your dog’s attention.
Stay
This is another command that makes your dog safer. Being able to command your dog to stay when in a potentially dangerous situation – like walking near a busy street, can save their life. Even if you feel confident that your dog knows the command, a leash is always the best way to go. You never know when the dog will decide to regress and disobey which could lead to a dangerous situation.
Walking on a Leash
Teaching your dog to behave on a leash is imperative. It’s best to start when they are just puppies. You have to teach the dog not to pull or bark at people. It’s acceptable to let them investigate their environment to a certain point, but you must be strict and require them to walk nicely and not pull. You have to be in charge and show them who is the alpha in the family.
Socialization
By starting your dog young, you can get your canine to be more sociable with other dogs. Take him to a dog park and for frequent walks where he’ll run into other dogs. It will be less likely to be animal aggressive or have a tendency to fight other dogs. Taking your dog to the dog park will also give them an opportunity to play and “act” like a dog. Get out some of a dog’s pent up energy and your training will be easier to accomplish.
