Finding a Boarding Kennel for Your Dog

At times bringing your dog along on a trip or vacation is not a good idea.  Consideration should also be given to the pet.  Some pets travel better than others.  Some of our canine friends get motion sickness or are filled with anxiety over the traveling.  If you are unable to find a dog sitter or a family member to help care for your pet, you should consider boarding the pet in a kennel.

It’s a realistic option when you must travel and are unable to have someone come to your house.

If you expect some traveling in the next year, it’s never too early Cute Sad Looking Dogto start asking friends and coworkers for recommendations.  Perhaps your veterinarian offers boarding facilities.  If you have trust in your vet, you may want to consider this option.

If you are unable to use your vet’s office, make sure you take the time to visit the facility.  Observing the staff and their interaction with the animals will give you an insight to the general atmosphere in the kennel.

During the visit ask about the staff.  How long have they been working there and what is their background and experience.  You should be able to observe how clean the facility is during your visit.  Express any concerns you may have about supervision.  What is the ratio of handlers to dogs?

Be certain the kennel is legal and licensed by the state.  Check to see its status with the Better Business Bureau.  Do some searching on the internet and see if there are any complaints about their care.

Things to discuss and question include feeding schedule and what kind of food is given, how much exercise and what type will they get, and you must visit where the dogs are kept at night.  Ask about their immunization requirements and enforcement.  What is their policy on flea and tick control?

Once you are satisfied with the facility and staff, discuss the pickup and drop off policy, what items you can bring in for your dog, what is the billing rate, and what happens if a medical emergency arises.
