Dog are like young children. I'm sure you've heard the theory that kids crave and thrive on routine and rules. Same holds true for your dog. Certain people are better suited for dog training than others. It requires patience, authority, and kindness.
Training will create a bond between you and your dog of trust and respect. Before you embark on this project, make sure you know your dog well. It's best to know the dog's personality, tendencies, and intelligence level. Dogs are as individual as people with varying degrees of intelligence, stubbornness, as well as other traits that will reflect in his training and may also be a factor in your training style.
Even professional trainers working with all types of animals say that training has a basic principle. If the animal realizes an action has a pleasurable result, that animal will repeat it.
The simplest and most common reward based training involves using food. That is your first step - finding the reward that your pet desires. Some animals react better to a stroke on the belly or neck area. Not all dogs do best with food based training. You have to find the best reward for you and your pet.
Every time your dog accomplishes an order, reward is necessary. The reward must also be joined with praise using a tone in your voice that will make it obvious to the dog that you are pleased. Your tone should convey pleasure. And in the same vein, punish mistakes and misconducts immediately. Let him know you are not happy with his behavior.
Your reward to the dog can just be pure praise and petting or a dog biscuit or small piece of cheese. Punish as little as possible and punish the dog immediately. If you wait, the dog won't know why you are upset or why your are treating him in the manner you are. The dog will not be able to relate your behavior with the act that they did unless you react immediately. Use a disapproving stern tone in a loud firm voice while saying simple words like - No, bad dog - Go lie down. To a dog, taking it's freedom away is serious. Shut the dog in a room or tie it up for a short period of time.
At times the best way to halt a bad behavior is to pointedly ignore it. This type of training is best demonstrated with the dog that greets it's family by jumping on them when they come through the door. Your first reaction would be to reprimand the dog in a stern voice while putting his paws to the ground. But the method that has proven to be most effective is to ignore the dog. The dog is happy that you are home, happy with your acknowledgement even though it is a negative reaction. Try turning your back to the animal and avoid any eye contact. Don't speak. Shut down your body language as well as verbal reaction. This usually will cause the dog to stop jumping in a short period of time.
