Puppy House Breaking - Training
Training of your new puppy should begin almost immediately on a small scale. They have short attention spans when very young so keep that in mind and start out with mini lessons. Keep the lessons simplistic. Do not combine training two commands at one time.
As your puppy learns a lesson you have patiently been trying to teach, stop the lesson. The halt of the exercise can be a reward in itself.
Training a puppy should be done with a patience and persistence. Regularity is key too. Make it a daily training exercise if possible. Begin with basics commands such as sit, lay down and stay. These basics will also assist in the more complex lessons. Their attention span is short so these lessons should be kept to short time frames.
In the beginning, both rewards should be given. Use treats as well as lavishing praise on your puppy when it follows your commands. The location of the lesson should be an area of little distraction. Puppies are like kids and can have their attention stray very easily.
Part of the training process for puppies should be early socialization and exposure to other types of animals. Without this early socialization lesson, your dog may act aggressively or in fear of other animals or humans.
After the training session, a little free play is a good idea. Your puppy will learn to look forward to this additional reward at the end of a lesson.
