An innovative group of dog owners located in upstate New York have come up with a plan to turn dog poop into a profitable compost business. They believe they will be able to market the final product within 2-3 years. There are many small scale pet waste composts available but right now there is nothing available to do this on a very large scale.
There are currently a small number of dog parks that offer on composting receptacles located in the parks. There is currently no off site large scale facilities in place so this is a very novel approach to dealing with the 20 billion pound of dog poop produced by our canine friends every year.
As with other program, we can learn from other countries. In Montreal, Canada, municipal officials have been composting since 2004. They estimate they compost about a ton of dog waste and about 7000 plastic bags from filling up the landfill with this process.
Although dog waste contains parasites and pathogens that make them incompatible for topsoil and garden soil, pet waste can be used for deep-fill.
