Choosing a Sitter for your Dog

Dog Information >>>Dog Articles >>> Finding a Pet Sitter

Although it may tear your heart out, there are times when taking your dog along on a trip is just not possible.

Finding a pet sitter has similar steps to finding a sitter for a child. The biggest issue is trust. You have to place your loved one in the hands of someone you can trust. You have to either trust them on a personal or business level.

Finding a sitter may be time consuming so plan ahead. A sitter's calendar will fill up quick especially during the holiday season so begin your search well in advance.

Man Leaving Dog Home

Your first choice is going to have your friends or family sit your dog or cat. Ideally it would probably be best if they could stay at your home while you are away to avoid making your departure any more traumatic for your dog. They will feel more comfortable if they are in their own environment. If that isn’t possible, perhaps someone who can come over to the house multiple times a day. If your relatives or friends are available and up to the task this is ideal.

The next best idea is to hire a pet sitter that will stay at your home. If you can find an individual through a personal recommendation start there. If you don’t have any contacts via word of mouth try finding someone involved with animal welfare or donates time at local animal shelters. You will also likely find professional sitter advertising in your local newspaper and on the internet. Try to get personal references before trying one of them.
