In the Roman Catholic religion, there exists the patron saint of animals and the environment, St. Francis of Assisi. The ritual or service is conducted to bless the animals. It is celebrated in early October by the Catholics. This belief in the blessing of the animals has spread to other denominations as well.
Along with the spread of this ritual, the types of services vary from religion to religion. For the Catholic blessing the priest will typically read passages from Genesis 1 on how God created and blessed the animals. After reading appropriate psalms, the priest will usually give the animals the blessings as he walks by them. As he passes, he’ll sprinkle them with holy water.
This ritual sets a good example of to children that are a big part of the ceremony. This can be a tool to show kids that animals deserve love and respect from humans. Children should be taught at a young age to have a respect for all animals.
