The Fourth of July and other events that include the ear splitting blasts of noise caused by fireworks will leave most pets quivering and shaking in fear. The blasting noises will cause most pets to shake in fear and become overwhelmed with anxiety.
There are steps you may help to alleviate some of their fear. Creating an environment that makes them feel safe will help. They will safer in a snug enclosure preferably with low ceilings. Try to provide a den like environment. Dog crates or airline carriers work well. Often dogs feel most secure in their crate. Try to place it in a well insulated area to cushion the noise level.
Use white noise to mask the noises going on outside. Set a fan high. Give them dog food toys stuffed with a healthy chunk of food. These can occupy and redirect the energies of dogs and cats.
Try to plan their exercise time and bathroom breaks to coincide with the quieter time of the day. Get them out in the morning and early afternoon before the festivities are going on hot and heavy.
Although your instinct will be to console and comfort your dog when they are going through their anxiety attack, it is not the best thing for them. Comforting them reinforces their emotional state. It gives validation to their fears and may cause their anxiety to actually rise. Distraction will go much further in helping the situation.
If you feel it necessary, ask your veterinarian about safe medications available for your dog. Some dogs are better off with prescription medications or natural herbs, than getting stressed from loud noises. Each animal is different so treat each case by using your own judgment. No one knows your dogs as well as you do.
