Although you may think it odd that someone who cannot care for themselves are living on the streets with their pets, but the fact is, ten percent of homeless people have at least one pet. Today, we have 3 – 5 million individuals dealing with homelessness.
Once Genevieve Frederick became aware of the situation, she decided
she could take action to help the homeless and their animals. She founded Pets of the Homeless which provides veterinary care and food for animals in the US as well as parts of Canada. It now boasts 288 collection sites and over 250 distributions sites. The group also helps out people’s pets when their owners are dealing with job losses, foreclosures, and depleted retirement funds.
Actions of the Pets of the Homeless include the following:
- 1. Promote to veterinarians and pet related businesses the importance of joining their quest
- 2. Speak out and educate the public on the issue of pets of the homeless and the disadvantaged
- 3. Campaign to food distributing organizations the importance of distributing pet food to people down on their luck
- 4. Provide grants to licensed vets and other nonprofit organizations that administer veterinary care to pets of the homeless
- 5. Provide grants to nonprofit homeless shelters that will allow pets sanctuary with their owners
This organization can help others to start a pet food pantry, volunteer, where to get pet food and veterinary care, where to donate pet food, and how to donate if there is no collection site in your area. They work with Scouts, churches, companies, and school children to increase participation in their goals.
